I’ve had a number of people tell me lately what they are giving up for Lent. When they ask me what I am giving up for Lent, I’m reluctant to answer. Partly because my Lenten commitments are personal. Mostly because I find a lot of people have the wrong idea about giving something up for Lent. Eugene Cho has some excellent thoughts on this in a post titled, “I didn’t ask you to give up coffee. I appreciate the Lenten season for many and various reasons. This year, I’m choosing – along with some other things – to give up “coffee” during the Lent season. Trust me, for someone that runs a cafe, has his offices in a cafe, and has access to free Stumptown coffee whenever I want, this will certainly be a “test” of self-denial.
